TOPICS:  This is primarily an introductory course designed to teach you basic concepts in ecology.  Two classes each week, usually Tuesdays and Thursdays, will be spent in lecture in the lab in CA 227.  The other class period, usually Tuesday afternoons, will include labs in CA 227 or in the field locally, where we will become acquainted with ecological principles by a series of hands-on encounters.

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES:   This course introduces the biology major to the concepts of evolution and adaptation, general principles of physiological ecology, population biology and epidemiology, community and conservation ecology, ecosystems ecology, and environmental biology, and biogeochemical cycles.

REQUIRED TEXTS: These are Absolutely Required!

Volpe, E.P.,  & P.A. Rosenbaum  2000. Understanding Evolution.  6th Edition.  McGraw Hill Publishers.

Ambrose and Ambrose’s Handbook of Biological Investigation (any edition will do, but you cannot participate in labs unless you have this book!). You need this one right away.

Smith, R.L., & T.M. Smith 2003. Elements of Ecology.  5th edition.  Addison Wesley Longman Publishers.
