Dr. Samuel Faulkner,
Professor of Biology & Environmental Science
Academic
Background
I hold
a B.S. and M.S. from Delta State University. I also did
graduate studies in ecology at Mississippi State under Dr.
A.A. de la Cruz. I received my Ph.D. from the
University of Southern Mississippi
in 1992.
I have taught at DSU since the fall of 1993. I have
attended workshops on wetlands (North Carolina State,
wetland soils; Ohio State, wetland delineation), as well as
studies on general biology for freshmen (Radford University
& Oregon State).
Grants
I have
received grants in urban forestry ($17000 from Miss. Dept.
of Transportation), a wetland grant ($10000 from Entergy
Corp.), and recently, a herbarium grant ($1800).
Research
Interests
I am mainly
interested in the ecology of wetland plants. Recent
research has focused on Mississippi distribution of Chinese
tallow tree, use of naturally-occurring fungi to control
the exotic Japanese wiregrass, and isolation of mycorrhizae
in coastal pitcher plants. Last summer, I demonstrated
(using genomic DNA evidence) the occurrence of a natural
hybrid of two southeastern bur-reeds.
Office
Hours & Contact Information
I keep an office in Caylor 228. My office phone is
662-846-4251. I can be reached at marshdoc@aol.com. See individual syllabi for
current times. I can also be contacted by writing me at:
Division of Biological and Physical Sciences, Delta
State University, Cleveland, MS 38733.
Weblogs
I
maintain two blogs, BioLog for students in ecology, field
botany and dendrology (http://spaces.msn.com/members/biologmarshdoc/),
and EnviroLog, for students in environmental regulations
(http://www.livejournal.com/~marshdoc/).
