TOPICS: 
This is primarily a course designed to learn various vascular plants from different habitats in northwest Mississippi.  One class each week, usually Thursday afternoon, will be spent in the lab in CA 209 or CA 227.  The other class periods, usually Tuesdays and Thursday mornings (10:50AM-12:05PM), will include lectures in CA 227, where we will become acquainted with plant taxonomy and the use of various dichotomous keys to identify unknown plants.  Our focus will be on use of the Cronquist system of plant classification and how to use different types of information to build systems of classification. Additonally, some class time will be devoted to developing an understanding of herbarium procedures and operations.  

CLASS LOCATIONS: Tuesdays & Thursdays in CA 227, 10:50AM-12:05PM; Thursday afternoons (1:40-4:20 PM) in either CA 209 or CA 227.

REQUIRED TEXTS: These are Absolutely Required!

Radford, A.E., H.E. Ahles and C.R. Bell.  1968.  Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas AND

Smith, J.P. 1977. Vascular Plant Families.


ADDITIONAL MATERIAL: 
1 - 15 cm ruler
1 - 10X or 16X hand lens (essential for field ID of plants)
1 – CD of powerpoint lectures & handouts
