TOPICS: This is primarily a course designed to learn
various woody plants from different habitats in
Mississippi. Two lecture
classes each week
(where we will become acquainted with woody plants),
usually Tuesday and Thursday mornings (930-1040 AM), will
be spent in the lab in Ca 227. The other class period
is a lab, Thursday afternoons (140-420
PM), and will include exercises mainly housed in Ca 209.
Here, each week, we’ll study both fresh plant
material and herbarium specimens to study woody plants in
the Mississippi flora. Additonally, some lab time will be
devoted to developing an understanding of herbarium
procedures and operations, and of silvic metrics in the
field.
PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES: This is primarily a course
in plant identification with an emphasis on woody plants.
The objectives of the course are to introduce you to some
practical and theoretical aspects of plant taxonomy as they
relate to trees, shrubs and vines. The practical aspects of
this course include learning by sight ID, some 125-130
common woody plants, learning the field recognition
characteristics of some common woody plant families, and
learning how to collect, press, and mount woody plant
specimens for herbarium collections.
CLASS LOCATIONS: Tuesdays and Thursdays in CA 227,
9:30-10:40AM; Thursdays in CA 227 or 209,
